Bryan Robson has reportedly turned down the chance to sign a new contract at Valley Parade following weeks of speculation over his future.
His assistant Colin Todd is now thought to be the favourite to replace him but experienced defenders David Wetherall and Wayne Jacobs could throw their hats in the ring for the job.
Whoever steps into the breach, City want to take their time before making their final appointment.
Managing Director Shaun Harvey told the Telegraph and Argus:``If a permanent manager isn't in place when the players return, then somebody will need to occupy the role in either a temporary or caretaker capacity.''
