The Bantams, who had won two of their previous three matches under new boss Taylor, took the lead in the first half through on-loan Liverpool defender Robbie Threlfall's free-kick, but Vale equalised through Marc Richards and secured the win thanks to a stunning Rob Taylor strike.
Taylor said: "Port Vale deserved to win and we played poorly. No-one wants to play poorly, but sometimes it happens.
"We set our standards in beating Rochdale and Rotherham, when I really enjoyed watching the boys play, but we fell well below those standards in this game.
"The two goals we conceded were poor from our point of view and there's still a lot to work on. We also looked as though there were some tired legs out there, which obviously didn't help.
"But you don't expect to win every game when you take over a team who are 18th in the table and I'm sure we are making progress. The bottom line is Port Vale played very well and we didn't."
