McCall told the Telegraph & Argus: "I hardly slept thinking about the different scenarios of meeting the players and as I said to them, I genuinely feel deep down that none of them let me down.
"Last season we were let down in certain areas, but this season you can see that they've given everything they had and things just haven't gone our way. The majority of players have come to see me and it was emotional."
McCall, who spoke of his frustration at not being able to collect more points in a division where there was so little difference between the teams, added: "If you take Notts County and Rochdale out there's nothing else in it in this league, which makes it so frustrating.
"I've done a lot of things wrong, naturally, and I've learned a few things, but I remember Neil Warnock always telling me he'd rather be a lucky manager than a good one."
