"I love the club and I'm sure and confident I could help the club move forward," Jacobs told BBC Radio Leeds.
"I think we can progress that club and that's my thinking about the decision to go for the interview."
Jacobs was in charge for Saturday's draw with Grimsby Town at Valley Parade.
City's joint-chairmen Julian Rhodes and Mark Lawn are currently interviewing candidates for a caretaker manager until the end of the season and will then make a permanent appointment in the summer.
"I thought long and hard about whether to apply for the interview. It's your future so you have to think about it long and hard," explained Jacobs.
"It can be hard living from day-to-day and not knowing my future and fate at this club. People know though that I have my faith and I trust in God and the Lord to just live every minute of my life.
"So it's no different for me as I trust him for my future and always have done. So I don't worry about things like that.
"I wanted to get the win against Grimsby and say in this interview that one was for you Stuart [McCall]. Unfortunately I can't do that, but hopefully he isn't too disappointed with a draw."
