The club has confirmed the 32-year-old, who still had a year to run on a two-year deal he signed last summer, will leave with immediate effect.
A club statement read: "The football club would like to thank Tommy for all his efforts during his time as a Bradford player and wish him all the best for the future."
Former Bantams manager Peter Taylor, who had worked with Doherty during his time in charge at Wycombe, signed Doherty for an undisclosed fee in July last year.
Doherty, who qualified for Northern Ireland through his grandfather, made nine appearances for his adopted country, the last of which was against England in March 2005. His former clubs include Bristol City, QPR and Wycombe.
